 THE SOCIAL COMMENTARY
 
Phil's musical tastes were wide-ranging. He knew backwards and forwards everything ever done by the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton...he played classical trumpet, and loved the work of Maynard Ferguson...and, unusually for a guy who grew up in East Meadow, Long Island, he was a die-hard country music fan. When it reached the point where it was impossible for Phil to come into the office anymore, we arranged it so that all his work was stuff he could do at home. Of that, the thing he enjoyed most was writing country parodies, and this one has always been my favourite of his. (Kudos to Dave Fields for his splendid job of making the vision real.)

I fell asleep for one whole year and opened up my eyes
I turned on the local news, and much to my surprise
I thought that there'd be lots of things that I wouldn't even know
But when I heard the headlines, it was still the same old show
Oooooh...no news.

The Whitewater Scandal is still hauntin' the White House
The budget war continues while the economy's goin' south
Diana packed her bags like she's been doin' for three years
And the trial of O.J. Simpson's where I nodded off last year
Oooooh...no news.
 
          Well, there's terror in the Middle East...
          Michael Jackson's still a freak...
          Garth is still #1...
          Still tryin' Kevorkian...
          Deficit is risin' high...
          Liz divorced another guy...
          Think I'll take another snooze...

All the stuff is still the same:
Has the whole world gone insane?
Politicians slingin' mud...
Folks are torturin' Elmer Fudd...
Hillary's still president...
Ain't no cure for AIDS yet...
NASA shuttle's all screwed up...
Pat Buchanan's still a nut...
Menendez boys still on trial--
This time, they should surely fry.
